Dwayne Johnson has revealed that bringing the demigod Maui to life in Disney's live-action Moana came with an unexpected physical challenge: carrying the character's iconic oversized fish hook. Speaking to People at the film's premiere, Johnson admitted the enormous prop was far heavier than fans might imagine. "That hook is so f---ing heavy," the actor said with a laugh, explaining that wielding Maui's signature weapon throughout filming was far more demanding than it looked on screen.
Reprising a Beloved Role
Johnson reprises his beloved role from Disney's 2016 animated hit, this time portraying Maui in live action opposite newcomer Catherine Laga'aia, who stars as Moana. To complete the transformation, the actor also spent hours each day in make-up and prosthetics recreating the demigod's distinctive tattoos, long hair and larger-than-life physique.
Emotional Connection to Heritage
Despite the demanding costume and cumbersome hook, Johnson said returning to the character was an emotional experience because of Maui's deep connection to his Samoan heritage. "Maui means everything to me," he said, adding that the opportunity to portray the character in live action allowed him to celebrate Polynesian culture in a new way.
