Actor Tauseeq Haider has issued a strong warning against dismissing sudden weight changes as compliments, emphasizing that unexpected weight loss or gain can signal serious underlying medical conditions. Appearing on Nida Yasir’s morning show alongside fellow actor Fareeda Shabbir and medical experts, Haider shared a personal family story to illustrate the danger.
Personal Experience with Weight Loss and Cancer
Haider recounted how his cousin experienced rapid weight loss that was met with praise from others. “In my family, we had a very healthy cousin. Her weight started to decrease and people kept complimenting her, asking what she had done to lose weight. The reality was that she hadn’t done anything. After six months, she was diagnosed with cancer,” he said. He stressed that unintentional weight loss should never be celebrated. “Doctors can explain it better, but losing weight suddenly is a high alert. You shouldn’t just be happy because your cheeks are slimmer or your jawline is visible. Losing four kilogrammes in one month without trying is a concern. It is a warning sign.” His cousin underwent chemotherapy and eventually recovered, but the experience taught him the critical importance of paying attention to unexpected physical changes.
Fareeda Shabbir’s Experience with Weight Gain
Fareeda Shabbir shared a parallel experience involving her husband, who faced rapid weight gain. “My husband was gaining a lot of weight, despite always eating the same way and never having this issue before. We immediately considered it a red flag,” she said, noting that the weight gain was later linked to an underlying medical condition.
Medical Expert Weighs In
Medical expert Dr. Uzma Hameed, who also appeared on the show, validated the actors’ observations. “Both sudden weight gain and sudden weight loss can be dangerous,” she explained. She distinguished between intentional and unintentional changes: “If there is no deliberate effort to lose or gain weight, then a sudden change is a cause for concern.” Dr. Hameed highlighted thyroid disorders as a common cause. “When patients come to me with these symptoms, one of the first things I evaluate is the thyroid gland. Excess thyroid hormone can cause rapid weight loss, while insufficient hormone production can lead to weight gain,” she said, emphasizing the need for blood tests to identify such conditions.
Health Message: Never Ignore Unexplained Weight Changes
The discussion underscored a vital health message: sudden or unexplained changes in body weight should never be ignored, as they may point to an underlying medical condition of which the individual is unaware. Early detection and medical evaluation are crucial.
