Imdad Hussain Acharani, a veteran educationist, social activist, and community leader, passed away following a cardiac arrest in Karachi on Sunday evening. According to family sources, he had been unwell for the past few days and suffered a cardiac arrest that proved fatal.
Career in Education Department
Acharani held key positions in the Education Department of Thatta and Sujawal districts. At the time of his death, he was serving as Taluka Education Officer for Primary Education in Taluka Jati, District Sujawal. He worked relentlessly for teachers’ rights and remained at the forefront of various movements launched for their welfare. He served as District President of the Primary Teachers Association on multiple occasions.
Early Life and Education
Born on January 5, 1970, in Village Tarr Ali Pur to Imam Dino Khowaja, an educationist and social activist of District Thatta, he earned a Master’s degree in Political Science and a Bachelor’s degree in Education from the University of Sindh.
Community and Political Activism
The late educationist was an active member of the Sindh Peoples Culture and Youth Organisation of District Thatta and played a key role in organising former Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto’s visit to Sujawal in 1993. As a grandson of classical feudal lord and politician Seth Motan Achar Khoja, he carried forward his legacy and maintained cordial bonds with local communities. He served as Secretary and later as President of the Shia Imami Ismaili Council for Shahbunder, and headed the Sindh Students Organisation and the Young Students Association, Hussainabad.
As a community leader, he coordinated with former MPA of the Pakistan Peoples Party Humaira Alwani, Senator Dr Karim Ahmed Khowaja, and Member of the National Assembly Syed Ayaz Shah Shirazi for multiple development projects, including a water filtration plant, Sui Gas, and solar lights.
Tributes from Colleagues
His close ally and fellow educationist, Mushtaq Ramzan Ali, said the late Acharani played a vital role in organising stage plays and cultural events in Taluka Jati and also acted in a number of stage productions. Noted columnist and labour unionist Ghulam Mustafa Hashmani lamented his demise, stating that his death had left a vacuum hard to fill. Aslam Parvez, Deputy Education Officer, paid tribute to the late social activist, saying the education department had lost a dedicated administrator. He added that while Acharani faced criticism for his straightforwardness, he always strived for the rights of employees, particularly teachers.
Funeral and Burial
Hundreds of people attended his funeral procession, including PPP MPA Shah Hussain Shah Shirazi, Shafqat Malkani, District Council Chairman Danish Khan Malkani, Dost Muhammad Thaheem, and Custodian of Sheikh Salamat’s Shrine Sain Rasool Bux Khalifo, among others. He was laid to rest in the ancestral graveyard near Tarr Khowaja village.
