The Public Prosecution Department located within the District Kachahry premises in Faisalabad is grappling with severe security deficiencies and a lack of basic amenities, according to sources familiar with the situation. The department houses the District Prosecutor and prosecutors responsible for cases originating from 45 police stations across the city. Approximately 140 officers and staff members, including 32 officers of Grades 17 and 18, are currently serving in this office, which manages and processes critical legal records, challans, supplementary reports, and other documents related to serious criminal cases.
Critical Security and Infrastructure Deficiencies
Sources indicated that despite the sensitive nature of its work, the department lacks essential security measures and infrastructure. The building reportedly has no CCTV surveillance system, creating serious security concerns for officials handling high-profile and sensitive cases. Additionally, the office lacks a generator to ensure uninterrupted power supply during electricity outages, which disrupts routine operations and official work. Several gazetted officers’ offices are reportedly without basic facilities, including air conditioners and other essential amenities.
Officials have repeatedly highlighted these issues before the relevant authorities. The matter was recently brought to the attention of the district administration during a meeting attended by Deputy Commissioner Captain (R) Nadeem Nasir. However, according to sources, no practical measures have yet been taken to address the concerns.
Role in Criminal Justice System
The Public Prosecution Department plays a vital role in the criminal justice system. After police complete investigations and submit challans to courts, prosecutors scrutinize evidence, legal provisions, and investigative procedures before representing the state during trial proceedings. The department's work is crucial for ensuring that justice is served in serious criminal cases.
Sources warned that prosecutors and staff continue to perform their duties under challenging conditions despite the high-risk nature of their work. They stressed the need for immediate government intervention to improve security and provide basic facilities. The concerns are further heightened by the history of violent incidents within the District Kachahry and Sessions Court premises, where litigation-related disputes and firing incidents have previously claimed several lives.
Urgent Need for Government Intervention
Given the department's critical function and the risks involved, sources emphasized that the lack of security and basic infrastructure is untenable. They called on the government to take swift action to install CCTV cameras, provide backup power generators, and equip offices with air conditioning and other necessary facilities. Without such measures, the safety of staff and the integrity of legal proceedings remain at risk.
