Deadly Storm in Romania After Heatwave Kills One

A powerful storm swept through Romania’s capital and surrounding areas overnight into Wednesday, resulting in one death and widespread flooding across 20 counties, following an intense heatwave that had gripped the region.

Storm Details and Impact

The torrential storm affected 60 localities, prompting emergency services to pump water from more than 350 houses and 100 streets, according to the General Inspectorate for Emergency Situations (IGSU). The hardest-hit areas were Bucharest municipality and neighboring Ilfov County, where a falling tree killed a person in their car. Emergency services received over 2,200 requests for assistance. Rescuers and resources, including trucks, water pumps, and chainsaws, were deployed from other counties to support the affected regions.

Widespread Damage

The IGSU reported that 988 trees fell during the storm, and 495 cars were damaged. The severe weather followed a heatwave that has affected much of Europe, with temperatures in some parts of Romania forecast to exceed 40 degrees Celsius (104 Fahrenheit). On Wednesday, the National Meteorological Administration issued a warning about “atmospheric instability,” predicting torrential rains and thunderstorms in the western and southern parts of the country.
