Around 200 children have been affected, and at least nine deaths have been reported in an HIV outbreak at Kulsoom Bai Valika Hospital in Karachi. The incident has been described as a human tragedy and an institutional failure of the highest order.
Families Demand Justice and Compensation
Parents of the affected children are demanding the registration of a First Information Report (FIR), proper treatment, financial compensation, and the completion of an inquiry. These demands are considered the minimum obligations of the state in such cases.
According to reports, families are facing difficulties in accessing treatment, compensation, and justice. The outbreak has also led to stigma in schools and workplaces for the affected children.
Call for Accountability and Penalties
Opposition leaders have called for heavy fines, criminal proceedings, and professional penalties against hospital administrations, doctors, suppliers, and every individual involved in the negligence. The continued operation of the hospital has been questioned, with some demanding its closure.
The Sindh government has been urged to act immediately by providing quality treatment to the affected children, either at the best domestic facilities or abroad if necessary. Families must be compensated, protected from harassment, and assisted against stigma.
