KP Health Authorities Review Comprehensive Polio Eradication Strategy

A crucial provincial task force meeting focused on polio eradication was convened on Thursday in Peshawar. The session was jointly chaired by Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Minister for Health Khaleequr Rehman and Chief Secretary Shahab Ali Shah. The primary objective was to thoroughly review all preparations for the upcoming National Immunisation Days campaign scheduled across the province.

Extensive Participation and Campaign Readiness

The meeting witnessed significant participation from various stakeholders. Members of the provincial task force, officials from the health department, representatives from both the National and Provincial Emergency Operations Centres, and law enforcement agencies were physically present. Additionally, international partner organisations sent their delegates to contribute to the discussions.

Through video link, Commissioners, Regional Police Officers (RPOs), District Police Officers (DPOs), Deputy Commissioners, and District Health Officers from across the province joined the proceedings. This broad participation ensured comprehensive input from all administrative and health tiers.

Participants meticulously reviewed readiness for the nationwide polio vaccination campaign, which is scheduled to run from February 2 to 5, 2026. The campaign will cover all districts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province with an ambitious target of vaccinating approximately 6.5 million children. To achieve this, more than 35,500 dedicated vaccination teams will be deployed throughout the province.

Detailed Preparations and Special Measures

Officials informed the meeting that preparations for the February campaign were complete and comprehensive. These preparations included thorough staff training sessions, detailed micro-planning at the local level, and complete operational arrangements to ensure smooth execution.

Special attention was given to challenging areas. Authorities have planned specific measures for 38 fully inaccessible and 25 partially accessible union councils located in seven snow-bound districts. In these regions, vaccination activities will be conducted as soon as weather conditions become favorable, ensuring no child is left behind due to geographical constraints.

Progress Reports and Strategic Commitments

The Provincial Coordinator of the Provincial Emergency Operations Centre (PEOC) presented an encouraging progress report. He highlighted significant improvements in campaign quality over recent months, citing increased access to previously underserved areas and a noticeable decline in the number of missed children during vaccination drives.

Health Minister Khaleequr Rehman reiterated the provincial government's unwavering commitment to achieving a polio-free Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. He emphasized that coordinated field operations and strong community engagement would remain central pillars of the province's eradication strategy.

Chief Secretary Shahab Ali Shah stressed the importance of targeted interventions, focused micro-planning, and improved facilitation for frontline workers. He highlighted these measures as essential for addressing any remaining gaps in vaccination coverage across the province.

Positive Spill-Over Effects and Monitoring Mechanisms

The meeting received encouraging data about routine immunisation activities. By January 27, 2026, these activities had reached 71 percent of communities, already surpassing the coverage achieved during the previous month. This indicates expanded outreach in previously neglected localities, demonstrating the broader impact of polio eradication efforts.

Officials also noted measurable improvements in routine immunisation indicators, including:

  • BCG vaccination coverage
  • Pentavalent vaccine administration
  • Measles-rubella (MR) vaccination rates
  • Oral polio vaccine (OPV) coverage

These improvements reflect the positive spill-over impact of intensive polio campaigns on the broader health system, strengthening overall immunisation infrastructure.

The meeting concluded with consensus on several key points:
