Israeli police announced on Friday the arrest of a 36-year-old man who was captured on video assaulting a nun near Jerusalem's Old City, marking the latest in a series of incidents targeting Christians in the area. The suspect, whose identity has not been disclosed, was taken into custody following the attack on Wednesday near David's Tomb, a holy site located just outside Zion's Gate on the southern side of the Old City. Police stated that the arrest was made on suspicion of a racially motivated attack, and the individual remains in custody.

Police released footage showing the nun with visible bruises, while the attacker was seen wearing tzitzit, a fringed undergarment traditionally worn by observant Jewish men. Olivier Poquillon, director of the French School of Biblical and Archaeological Research, identified the nun as a researcher at the institution. In a post on X, Poquillon condemned the assault as an act of sectarian violence.

He highlighted a lack of deterrence, noting that in many cases, arrests are not made, or suspects are released after a day or two. Even when charges are filed, they are often lenient, he added.

Weeks earlier, police restricted access for holiday worship for both Muslims and Christians, including Latin Patriarch Cardinal Pierbattista Pizzaballa. Additionally, Israel faced international criticism after a soldier photographed himself bludgeoning a fallen statue of Jesus on the cross with an ax in southern Lebanon. Israeli leaders later disavowed the incident and stated that the soldier would be reprimanded.
