Muharram Likely to Begin on June 17

The Central Ruet-e-Hilal Committee of Pakistan has indicated that the month of Muharram 1447 Hijri is likely to commence on June 17, 2025. This announcement was made during a press conference held in Islamabad, where officials stated that the final decision will be based on the sighting of the moon on the evening of June 16.

Moon Sighting Procedures

According to the committee, reports of moon sighting will be collected from across the country. Zonal committees will also convene to gather testimonies. If the moon is sighted on June 16, Muharram will begin on June 17; otherwise, the month will start on June 18.

Significance of Muharram

Muharram is the first month of the Islamic lunar calendar and holds great religious significance for Muslims worldwide. It is one of the four sacred months in which warfare is prohibited. The 10th day of Muharram, known as Ashura, is observed with particular reverence, especially by Shia Muslims who commemorate the martyrdom of Imam Hussain (AS) at the Battle of Karbala.

In Pakistan, the government has already begun preparations for security arrangements during the month. Special measures will be implemented to ensure the safety of processions and gatherings, particularly on Ashura. The interior ministry has directed provincial governments to maintain law and order during this period.

The Central Ruet-e-Hilal Committee urged the public to report any moon sightings to the nearest committee office. The official announcement regarding the start of Muharram will be made after the moon sighting is confirmed. Citizens are advised to follow the committee's directives and avoid relying on unofficial sources.
