Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Saturday ordered the military to launch forceful attacks against Hezbollah in Lebanon, following what the army described as a series of ceasefire violations. The decision came after the military reported that the Iran-backed group had breached the truce, which had been extended earlier this week.
Netanyahu's Directive
A brief statement from the Prime Minister's office confirmed that Netanyahu had instructed the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) to target Hezbollah positions in Lebanon with significant force. The statement did not provide specific details on the scale or scope of the planned operations but emphasized the need for a robust response to the alleged violations.
Military Operations in Southern Lebanon
Several hours before Netanyahu's order, the IDF released multiple statements detailing its recent activities in southern Lebanon. The military claimed to have eliminated over 15 militants in the region, including three individuals who were traveling in a vehicle reportedly loaded with weapons. Additionally, the IDF accused Hezbollah of launching explosive drones toward Israeli soldiers in the Qantara area. The drones detonated near the troops, but no injuries were reported.
During the operations, Israeli forces also discovered an anti-tank missile cache within a Hezbollah weapons storage facility. Furthermore, troops uncovered an underground shaft containing Kalashnikov rifles, indicating ongoing militant activity in the area.
Background of the Ceasefire
The ceasefire between Israel and Hezbollah had been extended earlier this week as part of efforts to maintain stability along the border. However, the IDF's allegations of violations have now prompted a renewed military response. The situation remains tense, with both sides exchanging accusations of non-compliance.
