Pakistan has once again voiced its strong support for peace and stability within Iran and the broader region. This reaffirmation came during a telephone conversation between Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar and his Iranian counterpart, Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi, on Saturday.
Diplomatic Outreach Amid Unrest
The high-level discussion focused on the current situation in Iran, where protests have been ongoing since December 28. These demonstrations were largely triggered by rising living costs and economic difficulties faced by ordinary citizens. This marked the second direct contact between the two foreign ministers since the protests erupted.
According to a statement from Pakistan's Foreign Office, Minister Dar expressed Islamabad's sincere hope that calm and stability would prevail in the neighbouring country. Both sides agreed to maintain close bilateral consultations on matters of mutual interest, underscoring the importance of continued dialogue.
Pakistan's Official Stance
Foreign Office spokesperson Tahir Andrabi elaborated on Pakistan's position, emphasizing that the country is closely monitoring developments. He stated that Pakistan respects Iran's sovereignty and supports all efforts aimed at a peaceful resolution to the internal challenges.
Andrabi highlighted the deep historical, cultural, and religious ties that bind Pakistan and Iran. He expressed full confidence in the ability of Iran's leadership and its people to navigate through the present crisis. The spokesperson also acknowledged the economic roots of the unrest, noting the impact of rising inflation on the public.
He welcomed steps reportedly taken by the Iranian government to provide relief to traders and citizens, hoping these measures would help alleviate the prevailing hardship. Crucially, Andrabi stressed that a stable Iran is in Pakistan's national interest. He firmly reaffirmed Islamabad's opposition to any form of external intervention that could lead to further destabilization in the region.
A Policy of Engagement and Restraint
This diplomatic outreach by Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar is not an isolated event. It reflects Pakistan's consistent and broader foreign policy of sustained engagement with its neighbours. The approach promotes dialogue, advocates for restraint, and seeks stability, especially during times of domestic and regional challenges.
By choosing direct communication, Pakistan aims to foster understanding and demonstrate its commitment to being a responsible regional actor that values peaceful coexistence and diplomatic solutions.
