President Asif Ali Zardari on Wednesday extended felicitations to the Governor General of Canada, Louise Arbour, and the people of Canada on their National Day, celebrated annually on July 1.

In a statement, the president said that Pakistan highly valued its long-standing and friendly relations with Canada, which were founded on mutual respect, shared interests, and strong people-to-people ties. He expressed confidence that bilateral cooperation between the two countries would continue to expand across areas of mutual interest, including trade, investment, higher education, and close collaboration in international forums.
The president's message underscores the enduring partnership between Pakistan and Canada, which has been built over decades of diplomatic engagement and cultural exchange. The two nations have worked together on various global issues, including peacekeeping, climate change, and sustainable development.
Expanding Economic and Educational Cooperation
Trade between Pakistan and Canada has seen steady growth, with bilateral trade volume reaching approximately $1.5 billion in recent years. Key exports from Pakistan include textiles, leather goods, and sports equipment, while Canada exports machinery, pulses, and fertilizers. Investment opportunities in energy, technology, and infrastructure are being explored.
Higher education remains a cornerstone of the relationship, with thousands of Pakistani students studying in Canadian universities, contributing to academic and research collaboration. The two countries also cooperate in multilateral platforms such as the United Nations and the Commonwealth.
President Zardari's message reflects Pakistan's commitment to strengthening ties with Canada, a key partner in North America. The National Day of Canada, also known as Canada Day, commemorates the enactment of the Constitution Act, 1867, which united three colonies into a single Dominion within the British Empire.
