UK Parliament Debates Imran Khan's Prison Conditions and Health Concerns
Zac Goldsmith, a former UK Foreign Office minister and former brother-in-law of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder Imran Khan, has raised significant concerns in the UK parliament regarding Khan's treatment in prison. Goldsmith urged the British government to ensure Khan receives fair treatment, citing reports of his deteriorating health and denial of basic rights.
Motion Highlights Fundamental Rights and International Outrage
Speaking during a motion presented by Baroness Alexander of Cleveden of the Labour Party, Goldsmith emphasized that while Khan's case is an internal matter for Pakistan, the denial of fundamental human rights cannot be overlooked. The motion specifically highlighted that access to medical treatment and the right to a fair trial are essential principles that must be upheld by all nations.
Goldsmith stated, "The treatment of Imran Khan at the hands of the Pakistani government is an international outrage." He further detailed the alleged violations, saying, "We understand that Imran Khan has been denied access to lawyers. He's been denied access to his family, including his two sons, my nephews, and he has been denied access even to doctors. We understand that he has spent much of his time in prison, in solitary confinement, and that his health is deteriorating rapidly."
Potential Review of UK Aid to Pakistan
In a significant development, Goldsmith raised the possibility of reviewing United Kingdom aid to Pakistan. He argued, "Pakistan is often at the top of the list of UK aid until that country's government demonstrates a clear and unambiguous commitment to the Commonwealth Charter that it signed up to, which commits it to an independent judiciary and the rule of law." This statement underscores the growing international pressure on Pakistan regarding judicial independence and human rights standards.
Background on Imran Khan's Legal Situation
Imran Khan has been in custody since August 2023 and is currently serving a sentence at Adiala Jail in connection with a £190 million corruption case. Additionally, he faces pending trials under the Anti-Terrorism Act related to the May 9, 2023 protests. These legal challenges have kept Khan imprisoned amid ongoing political tensions in Pakistan.
Family Criticism of PTI Leadership
A day before the UK parliament debate, Khan's sister, Aleema Khan, publicly criticized the PTI leadership for what she described as inaction over her brother's release and health issues. Speaking to reporters outside the Islamabad High Court, she said, "The party seems relaxed, as if the founder's treatment has already been completed. We are not seeing any action from PTI on his health matters. Enough is enough – anyone who cannot carry the weight of the founder's narrative should step aside." This internal criticism adds another layer to the complex situation surrounding Khan's imprisonment.
The debate in the UK parliament reflects increasing international scrutiny on Pakistan's handling of high-profile political cases, with human rights and judicial fairness at the forefront of global concerns.
