14 Children Dead in Lahore Tutoring Center Roof Collapse

At least 14 children were killed and five others injured when the roof of a private tutoring center collapsed in the eastern Pakistani city of Lahore on Tuesday, June 30, according to rescue officials. The incident occurred at an unregistered after-school facility operating inside a residential building.

Rescue Operations and Victims

Punjab’s emergency service reported that rescuers recovered the bodies of children and a 30-year-old female teacher from the rubble. The deceased children ranged in age from 5 to 16, with the majority being under 9 years old. The injured were rushed to nearby hospitals for treatment.

Unregistered Facility and Dilapidated Roof

Punjab Information Minister Azma Bokhari stated that preliminary investigations revealed the tutoring center was unregistered and operating in a privately owned residential building with a dilapidated roof. Such centers are widespread across Pakistan, where children often attend extra lessons outside regular school hours to supplement their education.

“If negligence, carelessness or any violation of the law is established, those responsible will face strict legal action,” Bokhari said in a statement. She added that Punjab authorities have been directed to survey unsafe buildings ahead of the monsoon season and introduce stricter regulations for unregistered tutoring centers and private educational facilities.

Official Reactions

President Asif Ali Zardari expressed grief over the deaths and called for effective safety measures to prevent similar tragedies in the future. The incident has raised concerns about the safety standards of informal educational centers, which often operate without proper oversight.

Broader Context

Building collapses are not uncommon in Pakistan, particularly during the monsoon season when heavy rains weaken structures. However, the collapse of a tutoring center highlights the risks faced by children in unregulated educational settings. Authorities are now under pressure to enforce building codes and registration requirements for all private educational institutions.
