A joint parliamentary party meeting of the opposition Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) and its allied parties on Thursday unanimously decided to stage protests both inside and outside the Parliament throughout the entire budget session. The decision comes in response to the alleged maltreatment of incarcerated former Prime Minister Imran Khan.
Meeting Details
The meeting, which lasted over four hours, was held under the joint chairmanship of opposition leaders in the National Assembly and Senate, Mehmood Khan Achakzai and Raja Nasir Abbas, along with PTI Chairman Gohar Ali Khan. Lawmakers discussed the outline of the proposed budget for fiscal year 2026-27, which will be presented by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif's government in both houses of Parliament today. They also deliberated on the overall political situation and their parliamentary strategy during the budget session, according to an announcement by the PTI.
Key Demands
“The meeting, attended by all opposition MNAs and senators, had a basic demand of providing medical treatment to Khan sahib, giving him access to his family, children, and personal doctors,” said PTI Chairman Gohar Ali Khan while talking to reporters at the Parliament House after the meeting. The opposition parties are united in their stance against what they perceive as unfair treatment of their leader.
In a separate development, Pakistan highlighted its Gandhara heritage and called for reviving the Silk Road spirit at a UNESCO event.
