Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty held a phone conversation on Tuesday with US Senior Advisor for Arab and African Affairs Massad Boulos, discussing recent developments in Sudan and Libya. The call, as reported by Egypt's foreign ministry, covered a range of pressing regional security matters.
Sudan Conflict and Political Process
During the discussion, both officials reviewed the situation in Sudan. Abdelatty emphasized the importance of preserving Sudan's unity and territorial integrity, supporting national institutions, and rejecting any parallel governing bodies. He stressed the need for a Sudanese-led political process to resolve the conflict, alongside an urgent humanitarian truce as a step toward a lasting ceasefire. Such measures would facilitate aid delivery and alleviate civilian suffering.
Libya Stability and Elections
The two officials also addressed Libya. Abdelatty reaffirmed Egypt's support for Libya's stability and unity, calling for the unification of state institutions. He advocated for a comprehensive Libyan-led political process that would pave the way for simultaneous presidential and parliamentary elections as soon as possible.
Water Security Concerns
Abdelatty raised the issue of water security, which Egypt considers an existential concern. He underlined the importance of respecting international law and avoiding unilateral actions regarding shared water resources, highlighting the need for cooperative management.
