European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said on Monday that it is too early to lift sanctions imposed on Iran. Speaking at a meeting of the conservative CDU and its Bavarian sister party CSU in Berlin, she emphasized that the sanctions were enacted due to Iran's suppression of its own population.
Conditions for Lifting Sanctions
Von der Leyen stated, "We think the dropping of sanctions would be too early." She added, "We first have to see a change, a fundamental change in Iran for the dropping of sanctions." The remarks highlight the European Union's cautious approach toward easing pressure on Tehran.
Background of Sanctions
The EU sanctions against Iran are linked to human rights concerns, particularly the regime's crackdown on dissent. Von der Leyen's comments reinforce the bloc's stance that tangible improvements in Iran's domestic policies are necessary before any normalization of relations.
The statement comes amid ongoing international discussions about Iran's nuclear program and its regional activities. The EU continues to coordinate with global partners to maintain pressure until Iran demonstrates meaningful reform.
