Israel Appoints First Ambassador to Somaliland, Strengthening Ties
Israel Appoints First Ambassador to Somaliland

Israel has appointed its first ambassador to Somaliland, months after formally recognizing the breakaway region in the Horn of Africa, the foreign ministry announced on Sunday.

Historic Diplomatic Step

In December 2025, Israel became the first country to recognize the independence of Somaliland, which declared autonomy from Somalia in 1991 following a civil war. The appointment of Michael Lotem as Israel's envoy to Somaliland marks a significant milestone in bilateral relations.

Lotem, currently serving as a roving economic ambassador to Africa, will take on the role. He has previously served as ambassador to Kenya, Azerbaijan, and Kazakhstan.

Timeline of Relations

The appointment follows the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two sides in December 2025. Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Saar visited Somaliland in January 2026, and in February 2026, Somaliland announced the appointment of Mohamed Hagi as its ambassador to Israel.

Somaliland, strategically located on the Gulf of Aden, has its own currency, passport, and army. However, it has struggled to gain international recognition due to concerns that it could provoke Somalia and encourage other separatist movements in Africa.

Saar's visit to Somaliland drew condemnation from Somalia, which described it as an 'unauthorized incursion.' Despite this, Israel continues to strengthen ties with the region.
