Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced that Israeli forces now control 60 percent of the Gaza Strip, indicating an expansion beyond the terms outlined in a US-brokered ceasefire plan from October. Speaking at a Jerusalem Day event on Thursday, Netanyahu highlighted Israel's military achievements and the return of all hostages, while hinting at further territorial gains.
Expansion Beyond Ceasefire Terms
Under the ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hamas, Israeli forces were supposed to withdraw to a so-called 'Yellow Line,' leaving them controlling over 50 percent of Gaza. However, Netanyahu's comments suggest the military has moved to a new 'Orange Line,' as reported by Israeli media. This marks the first official confirmation of an expanded footprint.
Stalled Truce Talks
The first phase of the truce saw the release of hostages captured during Hamas's October 7, 2023 attacks in exchange for Palestinian detainees. The second phase, involving Hamas's disarmament and a gradual Israeli withdrawal, has stalled. Mediators continue talks, but Israeli media report preparations for renewed fighting if Hamas refuses to disarm.
Netanyahu has repeatedly stated that Israel will complete its objectives if Hamas does not disarm. Since the truce began, over 850 Palestinians have been killed, according to Gaza's health ministry, while the Israeli military reports five soldiers killed in Gaza.
