Russia and China have strongly condemned the United States' indictment of a former Cuban leader, calling it a blatant violation of international law and a breach of national sovereignty. The indictment, announced by the US Department of Justice, accuses the former leader of human rights abuses and corruption during his tenure.
Russia's Response
The Russian Foreign Ministry issued a statement denouncing the US action as an attempt to interfere in Cuba's internal affairs. Russia emphasized that such unilateral measures undermine the principles of mutual respect and non-interference enshrined in the United Nations Charter. Moscow also expressed solidarity with the Cuban government and people.
China's Position
China echoed similar sentiments, with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesperson stating that the US indictment sets a dangerous precedent. Beijing urged Washington to cease its hegemonic practices and respect the sovereignty of other nations. China reaffirmed its support for Cuba's right to self-determination and called for a resolution through dialogue.
International Reactions
Other nations and international organizations have also voiced concern. The Non-Aligned Movement criticized the US move as a violation of international norms. Human rights groups, however, have welcomed the indictment, arguing it holds leaders accountable for abuses.
The former Cuban leader's legal team has dismissed the charges as politically motivated and vowed to challenge them in international courts. The US has yet to respond to the criticisms from Russia and China.
