The Saudi Arabia-led Masam project successfully removed 1,273 explosive devices from various regions in Yemen during the past week, according to a recent report. Among these devices were 1,157 unexploded ordnances, 105 anti-tank mines, three anti-personnel mines, and eight improvised explosive devices.
Scope of Operations
The demining teams conducted operations across multiple Yemeni governorates, including Marib, Aden, Jouf, Shabwa, Taiz, Hodeidah, Lahij, Sanaa, Al-Bayda, Al-Dhale, and Saada. These explosives were planted indiscriminately throughout the country, posing a severe threat to civilians, especially children, women, and the elderly.
Cumulative Impact
Since the launch of the Masam project in 2018, a total of 557,007 explosive devices have been cleared from Yemeni territory. In the current month of April alone, 5,818 devices have been removed. The project continues to focus on clearing villages, roads, and schools to enable the safe movement of civilians and facilitate the delivery of humanitarian aid.
Training and Support
Masam also trains local demining engineers, equipping them with modern tools and techniques. Additionally, the project provides support to Yemenis who have been injured by explosive devices. Through its humanitarian arm, KSrelief, Saudi Arabia remains committed to clearing mines from Yemen, enhancing civilian safety and promoting a secure environment for all.
