Syrian and French officials convened in Damascus on Wednesday to explore avenues for enhancing military and defense collaboration. Deputy Defense Minister Maj. Gen. Mohammad Khair Hassan Shuaib held talks with Herve Hamelin, the head of international military relations at the French Armed Forces General Staff, as reported by the Syrian Arab News Agency (SANA).
Recent High-Level Engagements
This meeting follows a previous discussion last month between Syrian President Ahmad Al-Sharaa and Gen. Vincent Giraud, chief military adviser to the French president, focusing on military cooperation. These engagements underscore Syria's efforts to rebuild security and diplomatic ties with European Union nations after years of isolation during the Bashar Assad regime.
Syria's Reintegration into International Coalitions
In a significant step toward reintegration, Syria joined the Global Coalition to Defeat Daesh in November, becoming its 90th member. This multinational force was established in 2014 to combat the extremist group. Furthermore, Syrian soldiers participated in military exercises with NATO members in Turkiye last month, marking their first involvement in such drills since the fall of the Assad regime at the end of 2024.
The developments signal a gradual shift in Syria's international standing, as the country seeks to normalize relations with Western powers and participate in regional security frameworks.
