Turkey and Pakistan have agreed to deepen their cooperation on flood resilience and climate preparedness, according to a joint statement issued after a meeting between Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Tuesday.
Key Areas of Cooperation
The two leaders discussed a range of issues, including enhancing collaboration in disaster management, early warning systems, and climate adaptation. They emphasized the importance of sharing expertise and technology to mitigate the impacts of climate change-induced floods, which have become increasingly frequent and severe in both countries.
Disaster Management and Early Warning Systems
Pakistan, which experienced catastrophic floods in 2022 that affected millions of people, has sought Turkey's assistance in developing more robust early warning systems and disaster response mechanisms. Turkey, with its advanced meteorological and disaster management infrastructure, has pledged to provide technical support and training to Pakistani officials.
Climate Adaptation and Resilience
Both countries acknowledged the urgent need for climate adaptation measures, particularly in vulnerable regions. They agreed to collaborate on projects aimed at improving water management, reforestation, and sustainable agriculture to enhance resilience against climate shocks.
Economic and Trade Cooperation
In addition to climate-related cooperation, the leaders also discussed ways to boost bilateral trade and investment. They set a target of increasing bilateral trade volume to $5 billion in the next three years, focusing on sectors such as textiles, pharmaceuticals, and information technology.
Regional and Global Issues
The meeting also covered regional and global developments, including the situation in Afghanistan, the Kashmir dispute, and the fight against terrorism. Both leaders reaffirmed their commitment to peace and stability in the region and called for a peaceful resolution of conflicts through dialogue.
The deepening of Turkey-Pakistan ties comes at a time when both countries face significant challenges from climate change and geopolitical uncertainties. Their enhanced cooperation is expected to not only benefit their bilateral relations but also contribute to regional stability and sustainable development.
