UAE and US Diplomats Discuss Middle East Peace Efforts

UAE Foreign Minister Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al-Nahyan held a telephone conversation with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio on Sunday to discuss the latest developments in the Middle East. According to the Emirates News Agency, the two officials reviewed the ceasefire agreement between the United States and Iran and explored avenues for achieving lasting peace and security through enhanced collective action.

Focus on Political Solutions

Sheikh Abdullah commended US President Donald Trump's efforts to promote peace, particularly between Lebanon and Israel. He emphasized that political solutions remain the most effective approach to resolving crises and strengthening regional security. The ministers also examined the repercussions of Iranian missile attacks on the UAE and other nations, assessing their impact on international peace, energy supplies, maritime security, and economic stability.

Ceasefire Developments

The initial ceasefire between the US and Iran did not include Lebanon. However, Washington hosted two rounds of talks this month involving Israeli and Lebanese officials, leading to two announced ceasefires between Hezbollah, an Iranian proxy, and Israeli forces. Last week, the 10-day truce between the two countries was extended by an additional three weeks.

Hezbollah had drawn Lebanon into the conflict after launching strikes on Israel in response to the killing of Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei on February 28. The discussions between the UAE and US foreign ministers underscore ongoing diplomatic efforts to stabilize the region and address security challenges.
