The Islamabad Capital Territory (ICT) administration has issued a revised notification imposing new business operating hours as part of ongoing austerity measures. According to the directive, all shops, markets, and shopping malls across the federal capital must close by 8pm every day of the week. The new rules take effect from June 1, 2026.
Key Timings and Exemptions
While most commercial establishments face an 8pm curfew, several essential services have been granted exemptions due to the nature of their operations. Pharmacies, medical stores, medical supply outlets, laboratories, and hospitals are allowed to remain open beyond the specified time. Petrol pumps and CNG stations will continue operating under their existing schedules. Milk and dairy shops are also excluded from the restriction.
Sports facilities, including gyms and padel courts, can operate beyond the closing time. Call centers and information technology companies that work with international clients have also been exempted from the 8pm deadline.
Restaurant and Grocery Timings
Restaurants, food outlets, tandoors, grocery stores, kiryana shops, meat shops, fruit and dry fruit sellers, vegetable vendors, and bakeries must close by 10pm. However, takeaway and home delivery services can continue without any time limitation. Marriage halls, marquees, and other commercial venues hosting ceremonies and festive gatherings are also required to shut down by 10pm throughout the week.
The notification emphasizes that these measures are part of the government's austerity drive to reduce energy consumption and operational costs. Businesses found violating the timings may face penalties as per the law.
