The Islamabad district administration has initiated a comprehensive preparedness campaign ahead of the upcoming monsoon season, focusing on drain cleaning, encroachment removal, and flood management measures. Under the directives of Deputy Commissioner (DC) Islamabad Irfan Memon, authorities have begun preventive steps to enhance water drainage and mitigate flooding risks during the rainy season.
Key Measures Under the Campaign
The campaign involves cleaning storm drains, streams, and water channels across the city. Inspections of manholes and low-lying areas have also been ordered. Field officers have been directed to complete assessments and ensure all arrangements are in place before heavy rains begin.
According to the district administration, cleaning operations are currently underway in various parts of Islamabad to remove waste and obstructions from drains. Officials stated that the exercise aims to keep drainage routes clear and facilitate smooth rainwater flow during the monsoon.
Encroachment Removal and Inspections
As part of preventive measures, encroachments built around streams, drains, and waterways are being removed. The administration believes clearing these areas will reduce blockages and improve water movement during heavy rainfall. The DC has instructed all Assistant Commissioners to inspect low-lying areas in their jurisdictions and prepare detailed reports on locations vulnerable to water accumulation. Information about areas affected by monsoon-related issues last year has also been sought to support planning and response efforts.
Emergency Preparedness Review
Officials said the campaign will also review emergency preparedness measures. Relevant departments have been directed to inspect flood-fighting equipment and ensure required machinery and resources are available. The district administration will examine the performance and readiness of the flood control system and early warning mechanisms. Authorities stated that the review aims to strengthen coordination among departments and improve response times in case of heavy rainfall or flooding incidents.
Speaking about the initiative, DC Islamabad Irfan Memon said the purpose of the campaign is to ensure timely preparedness and make water drainage more effective during the monsoon season. He added that drain-cleaning activities will continue over the next several days until all identified locations are cleared. The administration emphasized that the ongoing campaign is aimed at reducing risks, improving emergency readiness, and completing necessary arrangements before the monsoon rains arrive.
