Peshawar – Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Information Minister Shafi Jan has stated that the provincial government is finalising comprehensive security and administrative arrangements for Muharram in Kohat. The measures aim to ensure peaceful religious observances, uninterrupted civic services, and sectarian harmony throughout the holy month.
Jirgas with Community Representatives
Speaking at separate jirgas with Sunni and Shia representatives, the minister said a detailed security plan would be implemented for processions and gatherings. He added that the administration is coordinating with all relevant departments to safeguard public safety and maintain essential services.
Attendees at the Meetings
The meetings were attended by Deputy Commissioner Muhammad Nawaz, District Police Officer Shehbaz Elahi, retired chief justice Ibn-e-Ali, representatives of MNA Shehryar Afridi, officials from security agencies, religious scholars, community elders, and members of civil society.
Kohat as a Symbol of Tolerance
Shafi Jan described Kohat as a longstanding symbol of religious tolerance and mutual respect, noting that Sunni and Shia communities have historically cooperated in both religious and social affairs. He expressed confidence that Muharram would be observed in the same spirit of unity this year.
Review of Arrangements
Participants reviewed arrangements for security, sanitation, traffic management, electricity, water supply, and healthcare services. Officials agreed to ensure cleanliness along procession routes and around mosques and imambargahs, improve street lighting, and maintain adequate water availability. A special traffic management plan will also be enforced to minimise disruption.
Government Commitment
The minister said the government is committed to providing a secure environment for mourners and ensuring uninterrupted electricity during processions and majalis. In view of the summer heat, authorities are also prioritising the provision of drinking water, medicines, ambulance services, and other essential facilities.
Security Directives
Shafi Jan directed police to strengthen security at sensitive locations, imambargahs, and procession routes, and to maintain strict vigilance against any attempt to disturb peace. He warned that provocative speeches or efforts to incite sectarian tensions would not be tolerated and would be dealt with under the law.
Praise for Cooperation
Concluding the meetings, the minister praised the cooperation of religious leaders, community elders, the district administration, police, and other institutions, saying their collective efforts would help preserve peace, unity, and religious harmony during Muharram.
