Punjab Imposes Section 144 During Muharram for Security

The Punjab Home Department has enforced Section 144 across the province during Muharram to ensure law and order and strengthen security arrangements. According to an official notification, these restrictions will be in effect from 1st to 10th Muharram, corresponding to June 17 to June 26, during which seven categories of activities are banned.

Authorized Processions Only

The notification specifies that only officially authorized religious processions and gatherings will be permitted during Muharram. Any new procession, assembly, or religious activity without prior approval is strictly prohibited.

Weapons and Explosives Ban

Under Section 144, the display of weapons and explosive materials in public places is strictly forbidden without prior permission from the relevant authorities. This measure aims to prevent any potential violence or unrest.

Provocative Actions Prohibited

Officials have also banned provocative slogans, gestures, remarks, and statements that could incite sectarian tensions or hurt religious sentiments. The order further prohibits the dissemination of content or speeches that promote sectarian, ethnic, or religious hatred.

Restrictions Along Procession Routes

Residents living along procession routes are not allowed to set up observation points or store stones, bricks, bottles, or other objects on rooftops. Spectators are also barred from gathering on rooftops or shop fronts along these routes.

Pillion Riding Ban

The Home Department announced a ban on pillion riding on the 9th and 10th of Muharram. Exemptions are granted for women, senior citizens, and law enforcement personnel.

Officials confirmed that the notification has been formally issued, and all relevant departments have been instructed to ensure public awareness and strict enforcement of these security measures across the province.
