Punjab Govt Proposes Rs239 Billion for Police in FY2026-27
Punjab Police Budget Proposed at Rs239 Billion for FY2026-27

The Punjab government has proposed a higher allocation for Punjab police and public safety in the fiscal year 2026-27, although the amount remains well below what the Punjab Police had requested for the upcoming year. According to budget estimates, the Punjab Police is expected to receive around Rs239 billion for FY2026-27, compared to the Rs200.104 billion non-development allocation approved in FY2025-26. This represents an increase of nearly Rs39 billion, or about 19.4 percent, over last year's allocation. However, the proposed amount is still considerably lower than the Rs330 billion sought by the police department, leaving a gap of almost Rs90 billion.

In FY2025-26, the Punjab Police was allocated Rs200.104 billion under the non-development budget, up 6.8 percent from Rs187.365 billion in the preceding fiscal year. Out of that allocation, Rs167.407 billion was spent on employee-related expenses, including Rs64.923 billion for salaries and Rs102.484 billion for allowances. Another Rs21.791 billion was reserved for operating expenses, while Rs2.781 billion was allocated for physical assets and Rs3.251 billion for repair and maintenance.

Proposed Budget Breakdown for FY2026-27

The proposed budget for FY2026-27 indicates that the government intends to continue investing in policing, security infrastructure and technology-driven law enforcement. Around 80 percent of the allocation is expected to be consumed by salaries and day-to-day operational expenses. The budget proposes Rs9 billion for the newly created digital policing wing and Rs6 billion for ongoing development projects. It also includes Rs14 billion for setting up crime scene units in 28 districts and Rs2.2 billion for the construction of police stations and police posts in riverine areas. In addition, Rs12.88 billion has been earmarked for police modernization and Safe Cities projects.

Officials say the funding is aimed at strengthening investigative work, improving the use of technology in policing and upgrading public safety infrastructure across the province. However, some planned projects, including new police stations and training facilities, may have to be delayed because the department did not receive the full amount it had requested.

Overall Provincial Budget Context

The Punjab government's overall budget for FY2026-27 stands at approximately Rs5.9 trillion, with Rs252.1 billion proposed for the wider public safety and law-and-order sector. Although education and health continue to receive larger shares of the provincial budget, public safety remains one of the government's key spending areas. The increase in funding reflects the government's effort to support law enforcement and improve policing services.
