The Royal Commission for Riyadh City has officially launched full operations at the Western Station of the Riyadh Metro, marking the completion of the network's four principal stations. This milestone adds a significant landmark to the capital's expanding public transport infrastructure.
A New Landmark for Riyadh
The Western Station, which opened on Friday, is the largest among the metro's four iconic stations—alongside King Abdullah Financial District Station, STC Al-Olaya Station, and Qasr Al-Hokm Station. Spanning an impressive 112,000 square meters, the facility is designed to accommodate up to 60,000 rail passengers and 1,300 bus passengers per hour, according to the Saudi Press Agency.
Design and Sustainability
Engineered with a focus on both scale and environmental responsibility, the Western Station has achieved Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Gold certification for its efficiency and environmental performance. The station includes commercial spaces, a mosque that can hold 550 worshippers, public amenities, and a transport parking area with capacity for over 600 vehicles.
Strategic Location and Connectivity
Situated in the Dhahrat Al-Badiah quarter, southwest of downtown Riyadh, the Western Station lies along the metro's orange line. This line connects the Jeddah station and Tuwaiq on the western end to Khashm Al-An on the eastern end, serving as a major interchange hub that links various routes and key destinations across the city.
Alignment with Vision 2030
The launch of the Western Station reflects the rapid progress of Riyadh's integrated urban infrastructure. It supports broader goals of improving quality of life, enhancing mobility, and reducing dependence on private vehicles—all central pillars of Saudi Vision 2030. The Riyadh Metro network now features four iconic stations that collectively enhance the capital's public transport system.
