Minister for Information and Broadcasting Attaullah Tarar on Sunday described the federal budget for fiscal year 2026-27 as a relief-oriented budget, stating it provides support to various segments of society while laying the foundation for sustained economic growth.
Budget Debate in National Assembly
Speaking during the budget debate in the National Assembly, Tarar said the budget had been widely appreciated by economists and opinion makers, reflecting confidence in the government's economic policies. He said the government remains open to constructive recommendations from the opposition, but urged opposition members to also acknowledge the positive measures introduced in the budget.
Macroeconomic Stability Achieved
The minister said Pakistan had achieved macroeconomic stability through the government's consistent efforts over the past years. He added that Chief of Army Staff and Chief of Defence Staff Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir had also played an important role in strengthening economic confidence and stability.
Expressing optimism about the country's economic prospects, Tarar said Pakistan's economy had entered a phase of recovery and growth, with key indicators showing positive trends.
Relief Measures for Salaried Class
Highlighting relief measures for the salaried class, he said individuals earning up to Rs50,000 per month would remain exempt from income tax, while those earning between Rs50,000 and Rs100,000 would be taxed at a rate of only one percent.
Incentives for Exporters and Construction Sector
He said the budget also contains incentives for exporters and the construction sector, which are expected to stimulate investment and create employment opportunities. According to the minister, initiatives such as the Apna Ghar Scheme will help boost economic activity while addressing housing needs.
FBR Reforms to Broaden Tax Base
Referring to reforms in the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR), Tarar said the government was introducing measures aimed at broadening the tax base and improving compliance. He maintained that the new system would ensure that honest taxpayers are no longer burdened by those who evade taxes.
The National Assembly continues deliberations on the federal budget 2026-27, with lawmakers from both treasury and opposition benches participating in the debate.
