IHC Seeks Govt Response on Indus Commissioner Vacancy

The Islamabad High Court (IHC) on Monday issued notices to the federal government, seeking a response regarding the non-appointment of the Indus Water Commissioner. The court described the matter as a serious issue.

Court Hearing Details

Justice Arbab Muhammad Tahir presided over the hearing of a petition filed by Judicial Activism. Advocate Azhar Siddiq, representing the petitioner, argued that the position of Indus Water Commissioner has been vacant since September 1, 2025. He emphasized that under Article 8 of the Indus Water Treaty, the commissioner must be a permanent appointment.

Court's Directives

During the proceedings, the court called Deputy Attorney General Sajid Tanoli to the rostrum and directed him to obtain instructions from the government and inform the court. The court observed, "This is a serious issue."
