London police have placed more than 20 officers from the Royalty and Specialist Protection command on restricted duties following allegations of misconduct, including sleeping on duty and leaving posts unattended at Windsor Castle. The Metropolitan Police announced that 23 officers have been served with misconduct notices, with 21 of them now on restricted duties, as part of an urgent investigation launched last month.
Allegations of Dereliction of Duty
A spokesperson for the Metropolitan Police stated, "The alleged behaviour falls below the high standards expected of officers, particularly in frontline protective roles." The allegations were first reported by the Sun newspaper, which claimed that officers were accused of abandoning their posts at Windsor Castle, one of King Charles' official residences, and sleeping while on duty. The specialist unit is responsible for protecting members of the Royal Family and securing royal residences.
Ongoing Investigation
Two officers not placed on restricted duties will not be deployed to royal residences while the investigation continues. The police confirmed that enquiries are also underway at other royal residences. Windsor Castle, located west of London, hosted US President Donald Trump last year and is regularly used for private stays and state occasions. Buckingham Palace declined to comment on the matter.
The incident marks a significant breach of trust in the security apparatus protecting the British monarchy. The Metropolitan Police have emphasized their commitment to upholding high standards and ensuring accountability within their ranks.
