The event, occurring just after 6:00 am local time, is the deadliest mass shooting in the United States in more than two years, based on data from the Gun Violence Archive.
Details of the Shooting and Police Response
Police Corporal Chris Bordelon described the crime scene as "rather extensive," spanning three residences where investigators are combing for evidence. The victims, ranging in age from one to 14 years old, were reportedly descendants of the gunman. Two other individuals were struck by gunfire, with their conditions not immediately known. ABC affiliate KTBS reported that the wounded were adult women shot in the head, and a male child was injured after jumping from a roof.
The gunman, an adult male whose identity has not been released, carjacked a vehicle and led police on a chase before officers opened fire, fatally shooting him. No officers were injured during the incident. Bordelon confirmed that the suspect is believed to be the only individual who fired gunshots, labeling the event a "domestic disturbance." More details about the victims and gunman will be released pending notification of next of kin.
