Speaker of the National Assembly Sardar Ayaz Sadiq delivered a powerful tribute to Pakistani women on Saturday, commemorating International Women's Day by highlighting their invaluable contributions across all sectors of society. In his special message, he asserted that the nation's dream of achieving sustained development and prosperity cannot be realized without empowering women, stressing that genuine progress requires equal opportunities and meaningful participation for women in every sphere of life.
Emphasis on Empowerment and Legislative Priorities
Ayaz Sadiq emphasized that effective representation of women in education, health, employment, leadership, and decision-making processes is indispensable for Pakistan's sustainable development and social harmony. He noted that Islam grants women dignity, respect, and equal rights, leaving no room for gender discrimination or injustice. The Speaker called it a collective responsibility of the state and society to eliminate social barriers, inequalities, and violence faced by women, ensuring a safe environment, dignified employment, and equal opportunities for their advancement.
He highlighted that the current Parliament has prioritized the protection of women's rights and the eradication of violence against women in its legislative agenda. Specifically, he referenced the Domestic Violence Prevention Law 2026, passed earlier this year, describing it as a significant milestone in safeguarding women and children from domestic abuse and exploitation. Ayaz Sadiq assured that effective implementation of this law would be ensured to maximize its impact.
Recognition of Women's Political and Social Roles
Ayaz Sadiq commended the substantial representation of women in Parliament, noting their active and constructive role in legislation and national affairs. He praised the efforts of the Women's Parliamentary Caucus and the Special Committee on Gender Mainstreaming, stating that these forums are vital in promoting women's political, social, and economic empowerment, as well as advancing gender equality within Parliament. Additionally, he welcomed the launch of a modern digital application by the Women's Parliamentary Caucus, aimed at strengthening connectivity among women and highlighting issues affecting them.
Condemnation of Global Atrocities Against Women and Children
Expressing deep concern, Ayaz Sadiq condemned the martyrdom of over 150 schoolgirls during recent Israeli attacks in Iran, terming the incident tragic and highly condemnable. He stated that the loss of innocent lives, particularly schoolgirls, constitutes a grave violation and falls within the category of war crimes. The Speaker also criticized the silence of international organizations that claim to safeguard the rights of women and children, urging the international community to fulfill its responsibilities in protecting women's rights and preventing such atrocities.
Furthermore, he strongly condemned atrocities committed against women and children by Indian occupying forces in Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir and by Israeli forces in Palestine, noting that targeting innocent civilians, especially women and children, is a serious violation of international humanitarian law. Ayaz Sadiq called upon the global community to take cognizance of these injustices and implement concrete measures to protect vulnerable populations.
Tribute to Historical and Contemporary Women Leaders
Ayaz Sadiq pointed to the leadership of Punjab's first woman Chief Minister, Maryam Nawaz Sharif, as a testament to the capability and leadership potential of Pakistani women to serve successfully in high administrative and political positions. He paid tribute to Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto and Begum Kulsoom Nawaz for their remarkable contributions to democracy and the protection of public rights.
Highlighting the historic role of women in the Pakistan Movement and democratic struggles, he paid glowing tribute to Mohtarma Fatima Jinnah, Begum Ra'ana Liaquat Ali Khan, Begum Jahan Ara Shahnawaz, and Begum Shaista Ikramullah for their outstanding services.
