The National Economic Council (NEC) convened on Wednesday under the chairmanship of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif to review and approve the development programme and economic targets for the upcoming fiscal year 2026-27. The session was attended by chief ministers from all provinces, federal ministers, Adviser to the Prime Minister Rana Sanaullah, and senior government officials. Participants were briefed on the proposed development framework and key economic objectives for the next financial year.
Key Allocations and Proposals
According to sources, the total size of the proposed development programme for FY2026-27 has been set at Rs4.715 trillion. Of this amount, Rs1.126 trillion has been proposed for the federal government, while Rs3.138 trillion is expected to be allocated to the provinces. Sources further revealed that the Public Sector Development Programme (PSDP) is likely to be increased by Rs200 billion compared to the previous proposal.
Provincial Participation
Earlier, Chief Minister Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Ali Amin Gandapur, Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah, Balochistan Chief Minister Sarfraz Bugti, and Punjab Senior Minister Marriyum Aurangzeb arrived at the Prime Minister House to participate in the meeting alongside federal ministers and other officials. The council also deliberated on the distribution of development funds between the federal government and the provinces.
Finalization of Priorities
The NEC session is expected to finalize key development priorities and resource allocations ahead of the presentation of the federal budget for FY2026-27. The meeting aims to ensure a balanced approach to national development while addressing provincial needs.
