A devastating fire swept through a building in New Delhi's Malviya Nagar neighborhood on Wednesday, claiming at least 21 lives and leaving several others injured, according to police officials. The building, located in a densely populated residential area popular among students and young professionals, housed a restaurant on the ground floor and a hotel on the upper levels.
Rescue Operations and Response
Eight fire engines were deployed to extinguish the blaze, which sent thick smoke billowing from the structure. Over 40 individuals were rescued and transported to nearby hospitals for medical attention, as confirmed by Delhi police in an official statement. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
Eyewitness Accounts and Local Efforts
Witnesses described harrowing scenes of people trapped inside, hanging from windows and shouting for help as flames and smoke engulfed parts of the building. Local residents actively participated in rescue operations, assisting in evacuating those trapped and carrying the injured to safety. Some victims were foreign nationals who had traveled to India for medical treatment, as reported by local media. Many international patients visit New Delhi for healthcare and often stay in nearby hotels or residential accommodations.
Government Condolences and Compensation
Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his condolences for the loss of lives, with his office posting on X that the families of the deceased will receive financial assistance of 200,000 rupees ($2,088) each. Fires are a recurring issue in India, often attributed to lax enforcement of building codes and safety regulations by builders and residents alike.
