Pakistan experienced a reduction in overall anti-state violence and related security incidents in June 2026 compared to the previous month, according to a security report released on Wednesday by the Pakistan Institute for Conflict and Security Studies (PICSS), an Islamabad-based think tank.
Key Fatality and Injury Statistics
At least 262 people were killed and 134 others injured during June, according to PICSS data. Militants accounted for the largest share of fatalities, with 184 militants killed in actions by Pakistani security forces. Additionally, 52 civilians and 26 security forces personnel lost their lives. Among the injured, 63 were civilians, 50 were security forces personnel, 18 were members of pro-government peace committees, and three were militants.
Decline Compared to May 2026
Compared with May 2026, fatalities among security forces declined by 62 per cent, civilian deaths dropped by 27 per cent, and militant fatalities decreased by 32 per cent. Among the injured, PICSS recorded a 43 per cent decline in security forces casualties, a 57 per cent decrease among civilians, and a 67 per cent reduction among militants.
Kidnapping and Arrests
The report highlights a 50 per cent reduction in kidnapping incidents, with 27 people kidnapped in June compared with 54 in May. Security forces arrested at least 27 suspected militants during the month.
Militant Attacks and High-Impact Incidents
The number of militant attacks also declined, falling from 128 in May to 108 in June, a reduction of around 16 per cent. However, the country continued to face high-impact attacks, including at least four suicide attacks. Three of these were vehicle-borne suicide bombings, including a high-profile attack targeting Sindh Rangers in Karachi.
Regional Breakdown of Attacks
Balochistan witnessed a significant decline in militant violence, with 49 attacks reported in June compared with 71 in May, marking a 31 per cent reduction. The tribal districts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP), formerly Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA), also recorded a decline, with 17 attacks in June compared with 22 in May, a decrease of 23 per cent. However, the rest of KP witnessed a slight increase, with 37 attacks reported in June compared with 32 in May, a 16 per cent rise. Sindh recorded an increase, with four attacks reported in June compared with only one in May. Punjab witnessed only one attack, while no militant attack was reported from Islamabad, Azad Jammu and Kashmir, or Gilgit-Baltistan.
First Half of 2026 Overview
Overall, the first six months of 2026 recorded 2,166 fatalities, including 1,442 militants, 404 civilians, 307 security forces personnel, and 13 members of pro-government peace committees. Another 1,137 people were injured during this period, including 692 civilians, 281 security forces personnel, 136 militants, and 28 members of peace committees.
