Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Monday took notice of a complaint lodged by Transparency International Pakistan against the Sui Northern Gas Pipelines Limited (SNGPL) concerning alleged violations of the Public Procurement Regulatory Authority (PPRA) rules. The prime minister has directed the relevant authorities to conduct a transparent investigation into the complaints regarding irregularities in SNGPL’s tendering process, as stated in a PM Office statement.
He further instructed that if the allegations are substantiated during the inquiry, strict action must be taken against those found responsible. The directive underscores the government's commitment to ensuring transparency and accountability in public procurement processes.
Transparency International Pakistan, a chapter of the global anti-corruption organization, had raised concerns about potential malpractices in the procurement activities of SNGPL, a major state-owned gas utility. The complaint highlighted possible breaches of PPRA rules, which govern public procurement to ensure fairness, competitiveness, and transparency.
The prime minister's swift response reflects the administration's zero-tolerance policy towards corruption and mismanagement in state-owned enterprises. The investigation is expected to be carried out by a competent authority, with findings to be reported back to the PM Office.
This development comes amid ongoing efforts by the government to improve governance and curb irregularities in public sector organizations. The outcome of the probe will be closely watched by stakeholders, including civil society and the general public, who demand accountability from public officials.
