KARACHI: Sindh PPP General Secretary Senator Waqar Mehdi has expressed serious concerns over the prolonged and unannounced electricity load-shedding in Karachi, stating that K-Electric can no longer be allowed to operate in an unchecked and unaccountable manner. He announced that he would raise a strong voice against the ongoing power crisis during the upcoming session of the Senate.
Senator Alleges Excessive Power Outages
In his statement, the PPP Senator alleged that power outages lasting up to sixteen hours amid scorching summer heat have made life unbearable for the citizens of Karachi. He further claimed that K-Electric's exploitative practices have pushed the city into a deep crisis.
Impact on Essential Services
Senator Mehdi pointed out that K-Electric has even become an impediment to the delivery of essential public services, including water supply operations managed by local government institutions. He emphasized that the power utility is disproportionately targeting low-income and middle-class neighborhoods with excessive load-shedding.
Hardship and Mental Distress
The prolonged and frequent power outages are causing immense hardship, frustration, and mental distress among the people of Karachi, according to the Senator. He also criticized the absence of an effective and accessible mechanism for addressing consumer complaints, describing it as yet another form of exploitation of electricity consumers.
Senate Motion Against K-Electric
Senator Mehdi disclosed that he has already moved a motion in the Senate against K-Electric over what he termed the worst-ever unannounced load-shedding. He vowed to raise the issue forcefully in the next Senate session.
