Chairman of the Pakistan Ulema Council, Hafiz Tahir Ashrafi, has emphasized the importance of maintaining unity, interfaith harmony, and peace during Muharram-ul-Haram, calling it a shared responsibility of religious leaders, government institutions, and the public. Speaking at an inter-sectarian seminar in Lahore, Ashrafi urged citizens to remain vigilant and promptly report any suspicious activities to law enforcement agencies to help ensure a peaceful environment during the holy month.
Call for Vigilance and Cooperation
Ashrafi stressed that national peace committees, federal and provincial governments, religious scholars, and community leaders must work together to preserve harmony and prevent any attempts to disrupt public order during Muharram observances. He said Pakistan has played a constructive role in promoting regional stability and reducing tensions, adding that the Islamabad Declaration has contributed positively to international peace efforts.
Responsible Use of Social Media
Referring to the use of social media, he cautioned against sharing inflammatory, unverified, or misleading content that could fuel sectarian tensions. He urged people to exercise responsibility online and promote messages of tolerance and coexistence. Highlighting the need for mutual respect among different schools of thought, Ashrafi advocated the principle of respecting religious differences while avoiding interference in the beliefs and practices of others.
Concerns Over Gaza and Kashmir
Ashrafi also expressed concern over the humanitarian situation in Gaza, pointing to shortages of essential necessities for civilians, including food, water, and medical supplies. On the issue of Kashmir, he said a lasting resolution should reflect the aspirations of the Kashmiri people and noted increasing international attention toward the longstanding dispute.
Authentic Understanding of Jihad
Addressing broader issues, Ashrafi reiterated that violence committed in the name of religion is contrary to Islamic teachings and emphasized that the concept of jihad must be understood within its authentic religious context. He called for continued efforts to promote peace and harmony across the country.
