Recently, there has been a noticeable rise in aggressive behaviour, lack of patience, and unwillingness to accept differing opinions across Pakistani society. People are becoming increasingly impatient and more prone to anger, leading to a clear decline in the ability to acknowledge others' viewpoints. This trend has resulted in a surge of arguments and disagreements, both in private and public life, with hostility growing and the element of respect diminishing.
Escalating Conflicts and Social Harm
Even minor disagreements often escalate into serious conflicts, a phenomenon that is deeply harmful to the social fabric of the country. A healthy society can exist only when there is mutual respect and peaceful coexistence. When these values decline, they lead to division, misunderstanding, and social instability. The environment becomes toxic and full of negativity, undermining community bonds and national unity.
Root Causes Identified
The root causes of this issue include lack of proper education, the influence of sensational media, and the absence of patience in daily interactions. It is essential for families, educational institutions, and media platforms to actively promote tolerance, empathy, and respectful communication. At junior levels, schools and colleges should provide adequate counselling sessions for students to develop tolerance and learn the importance of respecting others.
Only in this way can the youth become more tolerant and respectful, which will help make society better and healthier. If timely steps are not taken, this trend may further deepen societal divisions, leading to long-term consequences for national harmony.
Call for Collective Action
I hope the concerned authorities and citizens will recognise the importance of tolerance and work collectively to restore harmony in our society. The time to act is now, before the fabric of our society is torn beyond repair. As noted, Alhamra provides hands-on sculpture training to aspiring young artists, highlighting the role of cultural institutions in fostering creativity and patience. Similarly, over 10,000 albatrosses were reported on a Japan island after near 'extinction', a reminder of how resilience can overcome adversity.
Amna Imran, from Lahore, emphasizes that addressing this issue requires a multi-faceted approach involving education, media reform, and community engagement. By working together, Pakistan can reverse this troubling trend and build a more tolerant, respectful society for future generations.
