The Pakistan People's Party (PPP) and the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) have held a meeting to discuss political cooperation for government formation in Gilgit Baltistan. The delegations from both parties deliberated in detail on various possible formulas for political cooperation to establish a government in the region.
Delegations and Participants
The PPP delegation included Nayyar Bukhari, Qamar Zaman Kaira, Sharjeel Memon, Nasir Shah, and the President of the Gilgit Baltistan People's Party, Amjad Hussain Advocate. Representing the PML-N were Federal Minister Amir Muqam and Hafiz Hafeez ur Rehman.
Both sides agreed to present their proposals to the central leadership of their respective parties. The PPP delegation stated, "The people have voted the People's Party to give it the mandate of Gilgit Baltistan and make it the largest party in the region. The decision regarding government formation will be made under democratic principles and in the best interest of the people."
Electoral Context
The PPP emerged as the largest party in the region after securing nine assembly seats in the elections. To achieve a simple majority in the 25-member house, the party requires the backing of four additional members. Party sources earlier indicated that the PPP had approached four independent winners in the Gilgit Baltistan polls. These independent candidates were contacted on the instructions of the party's leadership. According to PPP sources, after the independents, other parties in Gilgit Baltistan would also be approached soon.
In the recent elections, the PPP secured nine seats, while independent candidates and the PML-N each won five seats. The Majlis Wahdat-e-Muslimeen (MWM) won one seat.
