Dense fog descended upon multiple cities in Punjab on Sunday, creating hazardous conditions that severely disrupted both road and air travel across the province. The thick blanket of mist drastically reduced visibility, compelling authorities to take immediate action for public safety.
Major Motorways Forced to Close
The impact on road networks was immediate and widespread. Motorway authorities confirmed the closure of the M-2 motorway from Lahore to Kot Momin due to the dangerously poor visibility. Similarly, traffic was halted on the M-3 motorway, with the section from Faizpur to Samundri shut down. Travel was further hampered as vehicle entry on the M-4 motorway was suspended between Shams Kot and Abdul Hakeem.
Officials also reported that the Lahore–Sialkot motorway (M-11) has been closed as the persistent dense fog continued to make safe travel impossible. The Motorway Police issued urgent advisories to motorists, instructing them to use fog lights, maintain safe distances between vehicles, and drive with extreme caution if travel was absolutely necessary.
Air Travel Takes a Hit
The disruption was not confined to the roads. The foggy conditions significantly affected air travel as well. Aviation authorities confirmed that a total of seven domestic and international flights were disrupted due to the low visibility at airports in the region. This led to delays and cancellations, inconveniencing numerous passengers.
Public Advisory and Safety Measures
In light of the severe conditions, the Motorway Police strongly urged citizens to avoid any unnecessary travel during the fog. They emphasized the critical importance of strictly following all safety guidelines to prevent accidents. The advisory reiterated the use of prescribed fog lights instead of high beams, maintaining a significant gap from the vehicle ahead, and reducing speed to a minimum.
The situation serves as a stark reminder of the seasonal challenges faced in the region, with authorities on high alert to manage the fallout and ensure public safety until the fog lifts and normal visibility is restored.
