Historic Garden Reborn in Khushab
Khushab's legendary Kanhatti Garden, recently officially renamed Narwari Garden, has been miraculously restored to its original splendor following years of severe neglect and deterioration. The Sargodha Division administration spearheaded this remarkable transformation of what was once celebrated as the "Switzerland of Sargodha."
From Glory to Ruin
Located in the breathtaking Soon Valley, this century-old garden previously served as the very heart of Khushab. During its golden era, it attracted countless visitors from throughout Punjab, particularly in late September when mystical mists enveloped the surrounding hills, creating dreamlike scenery.
The garden's impressive colonial-era architecture featured:
- Majestic stone walls
- An elegant guesthouse
- A winding ancient staircase climbing the hill
However, decades of neglect and systemic corruption gradually reduced this picturesque destination to ruins. The once-proud entrance gate disappeared beneath collapsed walls and uncontrolled vegetation.
Local literary figure Malik Zafar Awan described the deteriorated garden as a "symbol of bureaucratic apathy." He revealed that for many years, the garden existed only as a line item in official progress reports.
"Every new deputy commissioner would inherit several project files proposing millions in restoration funds, but those funds were repeatedly diverted elsewhere," he explained, emphasizing that Forest Department officers carried significant responsibility for this situation.
"Every budget intended for Kanhatti was consumed by commissions and kickbacks - for certain officers, it had evolved into a side business."
Administration Takes Charge
With absolutely zero maintenance, the infrastructure eventually collapsed completely. The previously clear pond transformed into a stagnant swamp, while the guesthouse deteriorated into a mere shell of its former elegance. Kanhatti Garden had become a haunting representation of neglect, symbolizing lost national pride.
The turning point arrived when Commissioner Sargodha Division Jahanzeb Awan personally visited the site after learning about its dreadful condition. Rejecting reliance on reports alone, he conducted his own inspection and immediately ordered comprehensive restoration.
Embracing the commissioner's directive as a personal mission, Deputy Commissioner Khushab Farwah Amir initiated an extensive, multi-agency rehabilitation campaign. The collaborative effort involved:
- Forest Department
- Highway Authority
- District Council
- Waste Management Company
Within mere weeks, the desolate landscape underwent an incredible metamorphosis into a flourishing oasis.
New Life for Historic Landmark
The garden, now formally named Narwari Garden, has been completely renovated with numerous modern amenities:
- Picturesque walking paths
- Shaded seating areas
- Clean drinking water facilities
- Contemporary lighting systems
- Designated prayer area
- Refreshment zone
Educationist Malik Shahzad Awan characterized the project as "a story of administrative willpower." He noted that Khushab's residents finally have legitimate reasons for hope after enduring years of despair.
"When the intent is sincere and leadership is determined, even the most broken dreams can be rebuilt," he commented.
To guarantee Narwari Garden's long-term preservation, authorities have established a six-member maintenance committee while assigning dedicated staff for cleaning and ongoing upkeep, ensuring this cultural treasure remains vibrant for future generations.
