Thick, dense fog descended upon vast areas of Punjab late on Wednesday night, creating hazardous driving conditions and leading to the temporary shutdown of several critical motorway sections. Officials confirmed the closures were a necessary safety measure as visibility dropped to dangerously low levels.
Multiple Motorway Sections Forced to Close
According to a spokesperson for the Motorway Police, the intense fog blanket necessitated immediate action. Traffic on the crucial Lahore–Islamabad Motorway (M-2) was suspended from Lahore to Kot Momin. Similarly, the Lahore–Abdul Hakeem Motorway (M-3) was closed between the Faizpur, Jaranwala, and Darkhana interchanges.
The disruption was widespread. Authorities also halted traffic on the M-4 motorway from Faisalabad to Pindi Bhattian. As a precaution, the Lahore–Sialkot Motorway (M-11) was also shut down for all vehicles to prevent any potential accidents.
Reopening and Commuter Advisory
Later, as the fog thinned and visibility conditions improved, the Motorway Police confirmed that all affected sections—M-2, M-3, M-4, and M-11—were reopened for traffic. However, they issued a strong advisory to all commuters.
Drivers are urged to exercise extreme caution when travelling in such foggy weather. The police emphasized the mandatory use of fog lights, reduced speeds, and maintaining a safe distance from other vehicles to avoid collisions.
Weather Change Forecast by PMD
Separately, the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has forecast a shift in the prevailing weather pattern. The department stated that a new weather system is expected to enter the region in the coming days.
This system is likely to bring intermittent rainfall to various parts of the country, which may help disperse foggy conditions but could lead to a new set of travel advisories. Citizens are advised to stay updated with the latest weather bulletins.
