Mirpurkhas Rally Marks Int'l Day of Persons with Disabilities

A powerful demonstration of solidarity and advocacy took to the streets of Mirpurkhas this Wednesday, as the city marked the International Day of Persons with Disabilities with a vibrant awareness rally.

A Procession for Inclusion and Rights

The event was organized by the Empowerment Institute for Persons with Disabilities. The rally commenced from the Commissioner Complex and proceeded energetically towards Gulistan-e-Baldia. The procession was led by Additional Commissioner-II, Basharat Hussain, demonstrating significant official support for the cause.

A strong contingent of regional officials, educators, and a large number of persons with disabilities participated. Key figures included Regional Director of the Special Education & Rehabilitation Center, Abdul Hameed Dhani, and the Institute's Principal, Hassan Ali Leghari. They were joined by Deputy Directors Ashiq Sarhani, Sarwar Ali Soomro, and Faraz Ahmed, alongside many teachers.

Key Demands and Provincial Policies Highlighted

Participants carried placards with powerful messages such as “Disabled, not helpless” and “Special education is a basic right,” clearly voicing the community's demand for inclusive societal policies.

Addressing the gathering, Abdul Hameed Dhani shared crucial information. He revealed that Mirpurkhas alone hosts four rehabilitation centers dedicated to persons with disabilities. He proudly noted that Sindh is the only province in Pakistan that has implemented a 5% quota for disabled individuals in government jobs, a significant policy for inclusion. He further added that the institute supports its students by providing free transportation and meals.

Recognizing a Significant Population

Principal Hassan Ali Leghari addressed the crowd with a vital statistic. He reminded everyone that, according to United Nations estimates, persons with disabilities constitute approximately 15% of the global population. He emphasized that this substantial segment of society deserves equal rights and opportunities to contribute meaningfully to national development and progress.

The rally successfully amplified the voices of persons with disabilities in Mirpurkhas, drawing official attention to their rights and the existing frameworks designed for their empowerment, while also pointing to the continued need for awareness and implementation of inclusive practices.
