Karachi and Lahore are often compared as major urban cities with vastly different levels of development in infrastructure, healthcare, and security. While Karachi struggles with broken roads and unfulfilled administrative promises, Lahore appears to be progressing rapidly. However, both cities share a tragic negligence: open manholes that have claimed the lives of innocent children.
Another Tragic Death in Lahore
Following the heartbreaking case of three-year-old Ibrahim, who died after falling into an open manhole in Karachi, five-year-old Hassan Amir has succumbed to similar injuries in Lahore. The thought of parents enduring such loss due to cruel negligence is unbearable, yet it happens repeatedly.
Recurring Incidents
In Lahore alone, at least one child fell victim to open manholes each month between December and February. Chief Minister Punjab Maryam Nawaz had previously outlined a plan to prevent such fatalities and curb the theft of manhole covers. A project starting in Gujranwala aimed to cover 30,000 manholes with safety nets and covers bearing the Punjab Government logo to deter theft.
However, months have passed since the order was issued, and the slow progress has cost another young life. This criminal civic negligence must be addressed in both courts and the media. Currently, Hassan Amir's parents deserve justice. In the long term, all parents in Pakistan deserve the peace of mind that their children are safe, even when playing on the streets away from their watchful eyes.
