DHAKA - All-rounder Mosaddek Hossain delivered a match-winning performance with both bat and ball as Bangladesh secured a historic 86-run victory over Australia via the DLS method in the opening ODI of the three-match series at the Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium in Mirpur on Tuesday.
Historic Win Ends 21-Year Drought
This victory marked Bangladesh's first ODI triumph over Australia in 21 years, ending a drought that stretched back to their memorable win during the NatWest Series in Cardiff on June 18, 2005. The hosts dominated all facets of the game before persistent rain forced an early conclusion, leaving Australia well behind the revised target.
Bangladesh's Innings
After being put into bat, Bangladesh recovered from an early setback to post a competitive 284-8 in their allotted 50 overs. The innings was built around a superb unbeaten 86 from Mosaddek, who marked his ODI return in style after being out of the national side since 2022. Mosaddek's 70-ball knock featured seven boundaries and three towering sixes, providing the late acceleration Bangladesh needed.
He received valuable support from Najmul Hossain Shanto, who struck a composed 67 off 86 deliveries, including nine fours and a six. Opener Tanzid Hasan also laid a solid platform with an aggressive 54 from just 44 balls, while Towhid Hridoy added 31 and Taskin Ahmed contributed a brisk 20 at the death. Bangladesh were well placed at 140-4 midway through the innings before Mosaddek took charge, helping the hosts collect 69 runs in the final 10 overs.
For Australia, Nathan Ellis was the standout bowler with figures of 3-38, while Matt Renshaw and Liam Scott claimed two wickets apiece.
Australia's Chase
Australia's chase got off to a disastrous start when Taskin Ahmed dismissed Matthew Short with the first ball of the innings. The visitors never fully recovered as Bangladesh's disciplined pace attack kept striking at regular intervals. Cameron Green fought a lone battle with an unbeaten 52, while Alex Carey contributed 47 and Cooper Connolly made 35. However, Australia slumped from 128-5 to 156-9 as Bangladesh tightened their grip on the contest.
Express pacer Nahid Rana spearheaded the attack with outstanding figures of 4-41 from 10 overs, removing several key middle-order batters. Mosaddek completed a memorable all-round display by taking 2-37, while Mustafizur Rahman claimed two wickets. With rain ending play at 191-9 after 42.2 overs, Bangladesh were declared winners by 86 runs under the DLS method to take a 1-0 lead in the series.
