Jordan's national football team has suffered a major setback as defender Issam Smeeri has been ruled out of the upcoming World Cup due to a ruptured Achilles tendon. The Jordan Football Association confirmed the news on Friday, stating that the 26-year-old sustained the injury during individual training with the national team.
Injury Details
Smeeri, who plays as a right back, was injured in a session with the squad. The association posted on social media platform X that the player will now miss the tournament, which is scheduled to take place from June 11 to July 19 in the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
List of Absentees
Smeeri joins Yazan Al-Naimat and Adham Al-Quraishi on the list of players who will not participate in the World Cup. Both Al-Naimat and Al-Quraishi were previously ruled out after failing to recover in time from anterior cruciate ligament injuries sustained while representing Jordan at the Arab Cup last December.
Jordan's World Cup Debut
Jordan is making its first-ever appearance in the World Cup. The team has been drawn in Group J, where they will face Algeria, Austria, and defending champions Argentina. The absence of key players like Smeeri poses a significant challenge for the squad as they prepare for their historic campaign.
